About Us

guelphkids.com evolved from the idea that everyone needs a community – a neighbour who knows where to go for fun family activities or exactly the right place to find whatever it is you are after, the librarian who can suggest a good book for your child, a friend to swap recipes with one day and help us balance a busy family the next. That is what we are building with guelphkids.com.
It’s a forum for parents to connect with everything Guelph has to offer their families.  We all need a community around us that can help us navigate everything from ways to balance a busy family to finding the best deal on family essentials.

guelphkids.com is about enriching our family time through education and recreation. It’s about supporting our local businesses, connecting with local organizations, meeting our neighbours and making a difference in this great community of ours.

Please join in on the conversation. Leave a comment, offer a suggestion, promote your business or organization. We’d love to hear from you!

Who is behind the scenes?
guelphkids.com was founded by Karen McKay, a former marketing executive, and her partner Kevin Michael who is the IT department. Together they are parents of 4 great kids, passionate community volunteers and long time residents of the Guelph area.

The guelphkids.com website would never have launched without the talents, hardwork and patience of Heather Gray of Treadlightly.ca, who designed and continues to support the site. Heather balances her website business and community volunteering with homeschooling two busy kids. Please visit her website to see more of her wonderful work.

Thank you for your visit! We so appreciate you stopping by and we’re looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

Well, Karen, love the idea of telling people what kids can do during the week, weekends, etc. and I have my grandchildren arriving today but can’t find anything about the Magic Show that is mentioned, or the other things that are happening today and there is NO telephone number for me to call, so here is my message – can you call me or e-mail and let me know the details of what is happening at the library today – thank you, Erica

Hi Erica
Thanks for checking out the website. I am so sorry for the confusion.
The info for the library programs is accessible by clicking on the link in the post that says summer program calendar (it appears in red in the post)

Here’s the link http://www.library.guelph.on.ca/fileupload/progcalendar/GPL_Main%20Branch%20Children's%20event%20calendar_July%202011.pdf
You can just copy this into your browser and see all the children’s library programming for the month.
The magic show is happening this morning at the main branch downtown. It starts at 10:30 am. In my experience it is always good to get there a bit early to get in line as the room fills up quickly.

I hope this helps and you enjoy your time with your grandchildren!

what does it mean when it says “my comments are awaiting moderation”?

admin July 12, 2011 at 9:54 am

Hi Erica
It means that comments come to me and I need to approve them before they get published on the website. It helps minimize spam or inappropriate content for a family site.
Hope that helps!

Are there any creative writing courses offered for children? My daughter is 9 years old and wants to learn more about how to write stories as she wants to be an author one day.

Hi Janet
i am not aware of any local creative writing classes at the moment for children that are your daughters age.
I can suggest a couple of other ideas though.
There are excellent writing resources available for young people at NaNoWrimo http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/ and Bravewriter http://www.bravewriter.com/ offers online classes. If your daughter is interested in submiting her stories for publication, there a number of childen’s magazines that publish contributed content. You can find a partial list here http://www.stonesoup.com/kids-in-print/
I hope that helps. If I do run across writing classes I will definitely post them.
Good luck!
Karen
