Friday Fun – Free Things to do with your family

by admin on July 27, 2012

Guelph gets a little quiet for the last weekend of July. Something about that Hillside Festival :)   But there are still plenty of fun free things to do with your family.

If you travel to Kitchener on Saturday, afternoon you can take in the Civic District Block Party where you will find free family-friendly activities like art projects, urban wildlife neighbourhood walk family karaoke booth, a home movie screening, family story time, a picnic-blanket rental station, family yoga, Urban wildlife neighbourhood walk, family karaoke booth, musical performances, ands on activities, and displays from neighbourhood and cultural groups.  The Party takes place at the park between the Kitchener Public Library and Centre In The Square, (Queen Street & Margaret St, Kitchener) from 1 pm – 5 pm and is hosted by KWAG and the Kitchener Public Library.

Make a day of it in Kitchener and stop in at the Kitchener Market before the block party and then head to Joseph Schneider Haus, which is just down the street. The residents of the Haus will be demonstrating various aspects of Folk Medicine. Admission to Joseph Schneider Haus is free if you have a membership to the Guelph Civic Museum.

If you are an early riser on Sunday mornings head to the Boathouse on Gordon for a Guided walk with Nature in the Neighbourhood.  The walk begins at  9:00 a.m. and runs for about an hour.  The focus of each walk will vary according to what is happening in the environment.

Later on Sunday the Royal Botanical Gardens offers Back To Nature Walks from 2 to 3:30 p.m. This Sunday it’s at Rock Chapel. These walks are free and family friendly (although not always stroller-friendly) If the weather looks threatening, please check the Program Update Line at 905-527-1158 ext. 404.

Sunday evening you could take in one of the last Guelph Concert Band Performances of the season. They play at 7 at the Bandshell at Riverside Park.

There is also a free public swim from 5-8 at Lyon Pool, which would be a fun way to wind down the weekend.

Don’t forget to check out our full list of weekend happenings right here. Have a great weekend!
