Monday, July 23

Lots of great programming at the library today.
At 10:00 am the West End branch has Junior DIY Craft: Box Monsters for ages 4 years & up. Over at the Bullfrog Branch at 10:00 am join in Play Mat Mania for ages 3 to 7 years.
At 10:30 am at the East Side Branch little ones birth to 18 months can take part in Bouncing Babies. Or head to the Main Branch at 10:30 for Crazy Campfire Stories for ages 2-6.
Later, kids ages 7 and up can create Friendship Bracelets and Bead Creations at 2:30 pm at the Main Branch.  And if you need an early evening cool down head to 6:30 PM East Side at 6:30 for Sleepytime Stories for kids ages 2 years & up.

Tuesday, July 24

Today at 10:30 am you can enjoy Feathered Flying Friends Storytime for ages 2 to 6 at the  Westminster Branch, or at the East Side Branch sing along during Music Time with David Fox Ages 5 years and up and the Main Branch welcomes a Special Guest for Neighbourhood Nature  for kids ages 5 and up. Later at 2:00 pm the Westminster Branch hosts Junior Halloween…in the summer for ages 5 years and  up. And at 2:30 Teens can take part in in a Movie Making Shooting and Editing Workshop.
Help the Library make a 60 second video for their upcoming new website. The group will create commercial highlighting the library. Tuesday is the shooting and Thursday is the editing. You can choose to register for one session or both. Space is limited.

Cool off with a Free Tim Hortons Public Swim from 2-4 pm at the West End Community Centre.

Play with Clay program FREE for Families — Starting on Tuesday, July 10 and running every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the month of July. Come to the Pottery Room between 11am and 3pm at the Elora Centre for the Arts to try your hands at air dry clay projects! Create from your imagination or from the project of the day. All ages are welcome, however, Youth under 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 16 years of age. A small donation is appreciated. Wednesday, July 25

Head over to the Scottsdale Branch at 10:00 am this morning for a Junior DIY Craft: Funky Caterpillars for ages 4 years and up. At the Westminster Branch kids 5 and up and participate in  Let’s Talk Science! And at the Main Branch little ones ages 2-6 can enjoy Funny Fish and Scary Sea Monsters.
In the afternoon kids ages 10 and up can take part in the Hunger Games Training at 2:30 at the Main Branch.

Also at the library today: The Amazing World of Dragonflies & Damselflies
Learn how to become a Dragonhunter with Chris Earley from the University of Guelph Arboretum and discover the Amazing World of Dragonflies and Damselflies.  Come out and see why these aerial predators are so interesting. Learn about how to catch, identify, study and appreciate these flying jewels of the insect world! Event takes place at Noon at the Main Branch.

Wellington County Museum Simple Pleasures
Join The Wellington County Museum, located in between Fergus and Elora from 1-4pm for :00 to 4:00 pm, for Storytelling with Donna McCaw.  Join Donna for a great afternoon of stories and a few tips on story telling too! Wednesday Evening Walks at the Arboretum begin at 7 p.m. at the J.C. Taylor Centre at the Arboretum at the University of Guelph. These 1 ½ hour family friendly walks will be on a different topic each week and are $2 / person. This week:  Monarchs- An Adventure Story.  Long travels, many dangers, even another species pretending to be you! Let’s get specific on why Ontario’s best known butterfly is so cool! We will walk through The Arboretum looking for all the stages of life of this daring insect.

Something for everyone at the library today.

And at the Main Branch kids ages 5 and up will love the Alvin and the Chipmunks Movie Chip-Wrecked.

Every Thursday, July through August, learn about fire safety and accident prevention. Meet emergency responders. Check out the emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, police vehicles and ambulances. This week the Fire Department will be at Jean Little Public/ St. Michael Catholic Schools from 6:30–7:45 pm. At the Guelph Public Library Main Branch this morning, at 10:30 kids ages 2-6 can take part in Readers and the Beanstalk and at 2:30 pm there is Brushless Painting for kids ages 5 and up.

From 10:30 to 11:30 at the Guelph Enabling Garden in Riverside Park, please join the Guelph Guild of Storytellers for another season of wonderful stories along the river bank in a beautiful garden. Please bring a lawn chair and your own mug for refreshments. Donations are accepted to assist with the Garden’s ongoing Horticultural Therapy programming. http://www.enablinggarden.org

Saturday, July 28

On Saturday morning, the Galaxy Cinema hosts Cineplex Family Favourites at 11 am. Watch a family favourite film each week for only $2.50. A portion of proceeds go towards supporting Starlight Children’s Foundation. This week’s feature: Curious George sets off in a brand new tale where his spunky and fun-loving nature endears him to new friends he meets along the way and lands him in a series of mis-adventures. Head to Rockwood at 8 pm for a Night Hike. This evening hike will introduce you to the nighttime creatures that reside in the Rockwood Conservation Area. Free with park admission. Please visit the website for more information.

This summer, get up close and personal with some of Ontario’s most fragile and interesting creatures at Mountsberg Conservation Area’s An Evening With The Bats program. If you have ever wanted to learn more about these fascinating nocturnal insectivores, this is your opportunity.  Family programming includes bat-themed crafts, a puppet show, and a bat-themed story. The program runs from 7:30 to 9:30 pm, and includes an opportunity to explore the Royal Ontario Museum’s fantastic travelling display: The Bats of Ontario. Pre-registration required. Tickets are $15 for Adults and $10 for Seniors (ages 65 years and older) and Children (ages 5 to 14 years). Please note prices do not include applicable taxes. The Guelph and Chinguacousy Concert Bands perform at the Riverside Park Bandshell at 7 pm. Donations appreciated. Enjoy your picnic dinner while listening to the band!

If you haven’t made the trip over to the new Waterloo Region Museum and Doon Heritage Village, it’s worth checking out. There are activities daily in both the historical village and the museum that are lots of fun for kids. You can get in to both sites free if you have a membership to the Guelph Civic Museum.

This week at the Children’s Art Factory,  all roads lead to …tiny town. Create a tiny town with playmobil, cars, people and other toy buildings in the sand table. It’s Hillside this weekend!  If you are lucky enough to have tickets, enjoy yourself!

This weekend is also the Fergus Truck Show.  If you have a little one enamoured with trucks you might want to check out the The Mighty Machines Showcase which runs Saturday from 9-5 at the Fergus Truck Show. Most people know Mighty Machines as a children’s video series. The Mighty Machines Showcase is a family orientated community event that joins forces with companies in the area to bring these videos to life, providing adults and kids a chance to see construction and other service vehicles up close and personal and meet the folks that operate them! Enjoy the great outdoors at Royal Botanical Gardens and spend healthy, active, quality time with your friends and family. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, fox tracks, deer and other seasonal sightings. Every week is a different adventure! NOTE: Our trails are rocky and muddy. Baby carriers work well on our trails, and the kids just love the views! Most trails are not suitable for strollers, except those designed for off-sidewalk use. The Donkey Sanctuary Open Days happen from early may until October. The Public is welcome to visit and interact with the donkeys and stroll the beautiful grounds on Wednesdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm, May 6 to October 31. Bug and Butterfly University At Greenway Blooming Centre Breslau
Every Sunday and Wednesday afternoon throughout July and August. Fun programs for all ages, created and delivered by John Powers, internationally known as the Butterfly Man® and the Bug Man®.
Along with Marco, John teaches students about the growing and hatching of butterflies. He displays and explains his incredible collection of insects, some of which are entries in the Guinness Book of World Records. Guest speakers are featured as well as artists and photographers.

City of Guelph Public and Family Swims

City splash pads and wading pools are free all summer. Splash pads are located at Hanlon Creek Waverley Park, Norm Jary and West End Community Centre and are open daily from June 28 to September 3, from 11 am-7pm. The city’s wading pools are located at Sunny Acres, Mico Valeriote, Exhibition Parks and are open from June 28 to September 3, from 12-6 pm. The fountain at Market Square at City hall is operational from 9 am to 10 pm daily.
