What’s on this Week – July 3-8

It will be a hot one this week. Don’t forget that the city splash pads, wading pools and the fountain at City Hall are all great places to take kids to cool down – and they are all free!  Splash pads are located at Hanlon Creek Waverley Park, Norm Jary and West End Community Centre and are open daily from June 28 to September 3, from 11 am-7pm. The city’s wading pools are located at Sunny Acres, Mico Valeriote, Exhibition Parks and are open from June 28 to September 3, from 12-6 pm. The fountain at Market Square at City hall is operational from 9 am to 10 pm daily.

Tuesday, July 3

At the Guelph Public Library Main Branch today at 10:30 am Under the Sea Storytime for ages 2-6 and at 2:30 pm there is Teen Programming: Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows.

Cool off with a Free Tim Hortons Public Swim from 2-4pm at the West End Community Centre.

Load up the van. It’s $15 Carload night at the Mustang Drive-in.

Wednesday, July 4

At the Guelph Public Library Main Branch today at 10:30 am Shiver me Timbers! for kids ages 2-6 at at 2:30 pm kids ages 10-13 can make Popsicle Stick Bracelets and Kool-Aid Lip Gloss.

WCM Simple Pleasures
Join The Wellington County Museum, located in between Fergus and Elora from 1-4pm for :00 to 4:00 pm, for Gone to the Dogs! Start summer off right with a Diamonds in the Ruff dog agility show! You will be amazed by what dogs can do! Show begins at 1:30 pm on the east side lawn, meet and greet to follow. For more information please visit the website.

Wednesday Evening Walks at the Arboretum begin at 7 p.m. at the J.C. Taylor Centre at the Arboretum at the University of Guelph. These 1 ½ hour family friendly walks will be on a different topic each week and are $2 / person. This week: Myth Bugsters- Busting the myths about Insects and Spiders. There is so much false information about insects and spiders out there! We will go through some of the more common ones and figure out what is really going on! Come prepared with your questions about our many-legged friends.

Thursday, July 5

At the Guelph Public Library Main Branch today at 10:30 am kids age 2-6 can enjoy Super Stories for Superheroes and at 2:30 Teen’s can play on the X Box Big Screen.

Tiny Tot Thursday takes place at the Guelph Civic Museum from 9:30-11:30 am with Special musical guest Doug Larson. Join us for this fun drop-in program for children ages 1-4 and their caregivers. Admission $2.00.

Head to Rockwood Conservation Area at 2:00 pm for Creepy Creatures. Cuddle a rat, hold a snake, and wear a cockroach broach! Fun for the whole family! Free with park admission. Please visit the website for more information.

Every Thursday, July through August, learn about fire safety and accident prevention. Meet emergency responders. Check out the emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, police vehicles and ambulances. This week the Fire Department will be at Shelldale Community Centre, Norm Jary Park from 6:30–7:45 pm. At the Guelph Public Library Main Branch today at 10:30 am the littlest ones from birth to age 18 months can enjoy Bouncing Babies. At 2:30 pm kids ages 5 and up can take part in The Great Glow in the Dark Adventure.

This week’s performers: Since 1999 their dazzling solos and joy of live performance brought fans from Canada, the USA and England to their feet at Tanglefoot shows (CFMA “Best Vocal Group” 2007). Today as My Sweet Patootie, Terry Young and Sandra Swannell embrace a forgotten brand of showmanship that’s “two parts exemplary musicianship and one part vaudeville comedy.”

International Day of Co-operatives Celebration 9am-2pm Market Square, City Hall
The IYC Day 2012 event is a celebration of the Co-operative movement around the world, a showcase of local co-operatives, and an opportunity for the public to participate in a fun-filled event in beautiful Market Square, Guelph!
Featuring Children’s acts in the morning:
9-10 am: MUSIC with Brian: Juno-nominated musical act, with Melody the Hippo and Alan the Lion!
10:30-11:30 am: The Skalywags, a local children’s musical troupe that has been featured at events such as Hillside Festival
Featuring local musical talent in the afternoon:
12:30 – 1:30: The Bedsheets, a local band from John F. Ross C.V.I., showcasing and supporting local youth talent in the City!
Free face painting for children from 10AM to 1PM.

Head to Rockwood Conservation Area at 10am for a Rock walk with a messy ending.
This will be a leisurely stroll to visit one of Rockwood’s largest caves. For the adventurous there will be the option of crawling into one of the tunnels. If you plan on participating in the cave crawling please bring a flashlight and wear clothing that covers your knees and elbows. Free with park admission. On Saturday morning, head over to the Galaxy Cinema at 11 am for Cineplex Family Favourites. Watch a family favourite film each week for only $2.50. A portion of proceeds go towards supporting Starlight Children’s Foundation. This week’s feature: The Spongebob Squarepants Movie. There’s trouble brewing in Bikini Bottom! The Guelph Concert Band performs at the Riverside Park Bandshell at 7 pm. Donations appreciated. Enjoy your picnic dinner while listening to the band!

All weekend

Festival Italiano is celebrating 19 years of Italian heritage in Guelph. It will be held on the weekend of July 6th 7th and 8th, at the Italian Canadian Club of Guelph. Some of the many annual events that happen over the weekend include a children’s and adults bocce tournament, children and adult cheese rolling contest and the ever popular men’s and ladies Grease pole climb.There is plenty of delicious Italian food loads of musical entertainment and fun for the whole family.  Watch the website for more information.

Visit Elora for Art in the Yard, the 10th annual juried original art exhibition, with a Creative Children’s area and a youth photography contest. Come walk with us! Did you know that a walk in the woods reduces stress no matter what your age? Enjoy the great outdoors at Royal Botanical Gardens and spend healthy, active, quality time with your friends and family. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, fox tracks, deer and other seasonal sightings. Every week is a different adventure! NOTE: Our trails are rocky and muddy. Baby carriers work well on our trails, and the kids just love the views! Most trails are not suitable for strollers, except those designed for off-sidewalk use. Dress for the weather and meet your leader at the following locations*:
1st Sunday of every month: Hendrie Valley; meet at Cherry Hill Gate parking lot
2nd Sunday of every month: Princess Point; meet at the parking lot
3rd Sunday of every month: Cootes North Shore; meet at the Nature Centre

The Donkey Sanctuary Open Days happen from early may until October. The Public is welcome to visit and interact with the donkeys and stroll the beautiful grounds on Wednesdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm, May 6 to October 31. Bug and Butterfly University At Greenway Blooming Centre Breslau
Every Sunday and Wednesday afternoon throughout July and August. Fun programs for all ages, created and delivered by John Powers, internationally known as the Butterfly Man® and the Bug Man®.
Along with Marco, John teaches students about the growing and hatching of butterflies. He displays and explains his incredible collection of insects, some of which are entries in the Guinness Book of World Records. Guest speakers are featured as well as artists and photographers.
