Planning a Canada Day Party

by admin on June 27, 2012

Canada Day is a perfect opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. I thought I would put together a few ideas to help you plan, whether you are throwing a party for a whole crew, or looking for some family fun activities while you are waiting for fireworks. (Some of these ideas are borrowed from our American friends and just need a little tweaking to Canadian-ize them.) Have fun!

Kids’ crafts

Firework t-shirts

Make a red and white pinwheel

Canada Day Bird

Handprint Flag Shirt

Food

Red and White Brownie Cheesecake

This idea would be easy to adapt to make Maple Leaf Rice Krispie Treats

Canadian Living’s Canada Day cupcakes – in fact Canadian Living has a fabulous selection of Canada Day menus

Beaver Cupcakes – so cute!

Canada Day Flag Cake

Activities

Play street hockey (that’s a given) and revive some of the old standards – 3 legged races, egg and spoon races, lawn darts and croquet.

Decorate bikes and wagons with noisemakers, streamers and flags and have a parade.

Plan a scavenger hunt. For younger children you could hide paper maple leaves, for older ones and adults, this looks like a blast.

Play a trivia game. Here are a few Canadian quizzes to start you off:

Canada Day Quiz, Canadian Citizenship Test, or you could invest in one of the quiz games from the toy store.

Decorations

Tie Dye Bunting

Flags and pinwheels from the Toymaker

Canada Day Printable

Printable circles to make cupcake toppers, table decorations, napkin holders etc.,

Music

We love Mike Ford who sings about Canadian History. His Canada Needs You CD is one of our favourites. The library also has some of Michael Mitchell’s CDs in their collection. Of course at our house you can never go wrong with some Great Big Sea and Bare Naked Ladies as well.
